AVH Master Plan - About Phase II

Front Entry, Phase II

Final approval from the Aspen City Council for Phase II of the hospital’s master facilities plan was welcomed and applauded in July 2010. With that approval came a new burst of energy in the planning process for this critical phase of hospital improvements.

Funding of Phase II

Since July, funding sources have been further evaluated, timelines have been scrutinized, and more specific construction costs have been obtained. Phase II is expected to cost $73 million, with funding sources including hospital funds, philanthropy, and tax-supported (general obligation) bonds.

This funding allocation does not place an undue burden on any one group of citizens and is consistent with the community’s history for hospital construction. Each hospital (there have been three since 1891) has relied upon both philanthropy and public support. In 1973 the Aspen Valley Medical Foundation was formed, and with its fundraising efforts and general obligation bonds, the existing hospital was completed in 1977. We are clearly a community with a commitment to quality healthcare, and the citizens of today share the passion and commitment of past generations.

Will the hospital be better?

Aspen Valley Hospital has a reputation for personalized, quality care. It boasts numerous national awards for service excellence, skilled and dedicated staff and physicians, state-of-the-art technology, and a progressive approach to medicine. All that is missing is a modern physical plant – one that addresses today’s standards for privacy and comfort, and accommodates inpatients and outpatients equally well. Yes, the hospital will be better!

Lobby, Phase II

With the completion of Phase II, we will be able to:
  • improve surgical services with the relocation of same-day surgery adjacent to the operating suites and recovery unit;
  • provide sufficient space for physical therapy and cardiopulmonary rehab patients;
  • eliminate inappropriate interactions among inpatients, outpatients, and the general public;
  • ensure privacy and comfort for chemotherapy patients;
  • offer private rooms to all inpatients and emergency patients;
  • provide sufficient parking for patients and visitors;
  • incorporate leasable medical office space onto the hospital campus.

"We were on vacation in Aspen, and coming from a big city, we were nervous and unsure. Your entire staff, from the person at the ER entrance to the nurse that checked us out (six days later) was amazing. I would choose Aspen Valley Hospital over any in the Chicago area where I live."
